The 20th anniversary of SCTV
Update: August 2010

Indonesia: Nearing the evening of the 20th anniversary of SCTV (Surya Citra Televisi)—one of the oldest national broadcasting stations—exhaustive preparation for a massive, bigger-than-ever concert took hundreds of staff across the country busy for months. The big picture plan was to accomplish three groundbreaking records: having the TV station broadcast live for approximately 20 hours on one particular day, running the first giant outdoor concert stage at Ancol, Jakarta, and gathering more or less 550 entertainers for the whole program. All was set to take place on just one day, on August 24.

For the beloved TV audience, the program was such a treat in regards to the station’s impressive response on the soap operas as well as musical performances. But the other side of the coin described the TV team’s rigorous effort to really pull it off altogether. Director Programming of SCTV Budi J. Sutijawan gave some comment days before the D-day, “SCTV has gradually celebrated the anniversary by having some programs marking the previous months before August, like Harmoni concerts and Sinema Wajah Indonesia (Cinema of Indonesian Faces).” Covering more on the technical aspects, Vice President Production Assistant Duto Sulistiadi added, “For this year’s anniversary, the preparation took much longer process than the previous years. A lot more complicated and sophisticated in both technical, non technical, as well as artistic.”

Audio Rental Sumber Ria Sound Supervisor Andre Supryanata shared brief excitement when elaborating the concept of the Gempita 20 Tahun (Spectacular 20 Years) concert at Carnaval Beach Ancol on August 24, evening. “We’re very close with SCTV, and especially for the anniversary, they would like for the first time to present 20 bands playing at the same time on the stage. Sumber Ria is challenged to go all out, providing the mixers, loudspeakers, and the band equipment,” he began. But the company was not at all daunted with the event proposition, as earlier this year saw Sumber Ria managing the sound equipment necessary for Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010, along with a few other partners. “What’s very important for us is that this is the first time for us to set 9 mixers for one event. SCTV is pretty ambitious on the scale of the event,” concluded Supryanata.

Similar note was also shared by Deny Omen, stage designer in charge over the Gempita 20 Tahun concert. “We’re thinking of creating a half circle shape backdrop stage, encompassing extensive LED and a special reflector effect of the moonlight,” said he. Little did everybody know that the stage creation took almost a month in the concept, and full one week in the construction. Bob Asap also lent a hand in polishing the stage with that particular moonlight effect, across the approximately 15-meter wide and 8-meter high LED at the backdrop supplied by 2 companies PT LED Pro and Sima Agustus. The beachside Ancol was soon to be drastically transformed into somewhat like Ibiza. This, according to Omen, was the grandest outdoor stage ever erected for a concert in the country.

The content of the show was not less impressive as well. Starting up as early as 5 AM on August 24, the station began broadcasting live. Morning news show initiated the program, followed by some gossip show and music request InBox show that was staged in both SCTV Jakarta studios, at Senayan City Mall and Kebon Jeruk branch. Even comedy performance Teamlo Cinta Uya had to be conducted in live. Yet, the program climaxed at 19.30 when the concert went live on camera.

President Director of SCTV Fofo Sariaatmadja opened up the concert by delivering a short speech of gratitude to the national fans of the TV channel. He stepped down the pedestal, but was soon honored with two honorary awards from MURI (Museum of Indonesian Records)—for pioneering a 20-hour live show on national television broadcasting and gathering up the most number of entertainers in one extensive program.

After the awards, the stage looked spectacularly built, incorporating a plastic-shelled quarters for the orchestra playing in the middle of the half moon shape artificial flooring. There surrounding the stage were a few riggings of EAW KF760 as the main PA, as many as 32 boxes. The accompanying subwoofers were 32 boxes of custom-built SB550. Mixers ready to cater the grand performances onstage were mostly of DiGiCo: 3 D5 mixers, 2 DiGiCo D1, and 4 SD8 models. 7 band equipment sets were also provided by Sumber Ria to keep up with the number of performing artists onstage with DPA surround mic

The opening act brought up a thumping appearance of Kotak Band with 20 young drummers at the Gempita 20 Tahun concert. Exuberant, adrenaline-pumping as it was, the act also demonstrated a rather difficulty for the mixing to be done impeccably. Despite so, the singing of the band vocalist was unscathed, excellently balanced with the 20 simultaneously playing drums. Sumber Ria also smartly positioned a staggering number of 60 RCF-Art 500 monitor speakers and Meyer Sound MJF212.

Three MCs came out afterwards, reintroducing SCTV on its 20th anniversary while giving some time for the exciting upcoming acts to prep up. Young pop artists such as Gita Gutawa and Cinta Laura sang a few songs prior to an amazing collaboration between one instrument virtuoso and 20 young musicians. Guitarist Enda from Ungu band drew all the attention when he played his guitar along with 20 female guitarists from GSI (Guitar School of Indonesia). In respect to the Ramadan month, Wali band took 20 Islamic religious leaders to chant along a religious-pop song.

Magenta Orchestra under conductor and arranger Andy Rianto stayed as the music arranger and also the playing orchestra for the whole evening. The concert went on live till 1 AM, August 25, summing up five and a half hours musical euphoria for all the audiences in the venue and those at home. In between the mentioned-above grand acts, there were a large number of single artists who showcased their singing talent. One little glitch in the sound though occurred when Ridho Rhoma, the son of Dangdut legendary Rhoma Irama, had his sound undelivered via microphone in the initial minutes of his appearance.

A list of other performing artists included Mulan Jameela, Dewi Persik, Gigi, Drive, Teuku Wisnu & Shireen Sungkar, Slank, Ari Lasso, Dewa 19, Mahadewi, Rossa, ST12, Maylaffayza, Kuburan, Padi, and Kerispatih. A total of 40 bands and an array of soloists wrapped up the festivity with running-the-gamut song genres, from Rock, Pop, R&B to Ballad and Indonesian signature Dangdut melodies. One highlight of the whole evening was a tribute to Indonesian legendary singer the late Chrisye by Afgan, who reinterpreted two of Chrisye’s songs in a more youthful pop nuance.

For an extravagant setting and massive scale performances, the anniversary appeared as not only privilege entertainment to the audience, but also a testament to the national showbiz industry. And the result confirmed that the local music scene could really cater to such scale, meaning that it is not possible to raise up the bar a little bit higher next time.
